Kett HI520 02 Instant Concrete and Mortar Moisture Meter handheld

Concrete and Mortar Moisture Meters

Measure moisture content in concrete, mortar, drywall, gypsum board, brick, tile, and other dense materials — instantly and without damaging the surface. Handheld, sample-tray, and probe-based instruments give construction crews, QC teams, and lab technicians the right tool for every stage from fresh mix to cured slab.

Factory calibrations for six common material types deliver accurate readings out of the box, while user-programmable calibrations extend each instrument to your specific materials. Automatic temperature compensation and built-in alarms keep testing fast and reliable in any field or plant environment.

Key Benefits

Why manufacturers, laboratories, and field engineers choose Kett instant moisture meters for concrete, mortar, drywall and other dense materials.

Instant Results

Press the sensor against a surface, place a sample in the tray, or insert probes into drilled holes. The moisture content immediately appears on the display. No waiting for oven-dry tests or chemical reactions.

Non-Destructive Testing

The HI520 measures moisture through contact alone, with no drilling, cutting, or sampling required. Test walls, slabs, panels, and tiles without marking or damaging the finished surface.

Material-Specific Calibrations

Factory calibrations for concrete, mortar, gypsum, ALC, CSB, and lightweight aggregate concrete deliver accurate readings for each material type — no manual corrections needed. User-programmable calibrations extend testing to materials beyond the factory set.

Automatic Temperature Compensation

Integrated temperature correction eliminates the effects of ambient and surface temperature differences on readings. Manual override is available when the sample temperature differs significantly from the instrument.

Configurable Alarms

Set upper and lower moisture limits and the instrument sounds an audible alert when readings fall outside specification. Test large areas or multiple samples quickly without watching the display for every reading.

Field-Ready & Portable

Battery-powered operation, backlit displays, and compact handheld designs let you test on job sites, plant floors, and in confined spaces. The HI520 weighs under 400 grams and fits in a carrying pouch.

How it Works

The HI520 uses high-frequency capacitance to measure moisture in cured surfaces. You select a material calibration, power on the instrument with the sensor pointed into the air for automatic zeroing, then press the sensor flat against the surface. The instrument measures the dielectric response of the material.  Water increases capacitance in proportion to moisture content.  The instrument displays the result as a direct percentage on the backlit LCD. Dual-depth mode lets you compare moisture at the surface versus deeper within the material, helping identify moisture gradients in thick slabs or walls.

For fresh concrete and aggregate, the HI300 and HI330 use a sample-tray method. You scoop the material into a test cell, compact it level with the strike-off bar, and place the sealed cell onto the instrument’s measuring platform. The instrument calculates moisture content from capacitance readings combined with mix data you enter (batch weights, particle density, and absorption), and reports the result in under five seconds.

The HI800 measures moisture inside walls and slabs using electrical resistance. You drill two small holes at a fixed 30mm spacing, insert brush-tipped probes, and the instrument reads conductivity between the probes to determine internal moisture content. Continuous and hold modes support both spot checks and systematic surveys. A COUNT mode provides raw resistance values for creating custom calibration curves against reference methods.

What You Can Measure

Sample Industries and Applications

Concrete and mortar moisture meters support quality control and process decisions across construction, manufacturing, and materials research.

Manufacturing

Construction & Waterproofing

Moisture testing before membranes, coatings & paint are applied to walls, floors & facades. Coatings applied to concrete that hasn’t dried to spec cause blistering, adhesion failure & costly rework. A handheld meter verifies readiness at each stage without waiting for lab results.

Building Materials Manufacturing

QC testing during production & post-cure storage of block, brick, precast & drywall. Too much residual moisture leads to efflorescence, cracking & out-of-spec shipments. Surface-contact & sample-tray meters give QC staff immediate feedback on the production floor.

Ready-Mix & Batch Plants

Aggregate & sand moisture measurement before batching to control water-to-cement ratios. Overly wet aggregate adds uncontrolled water, reducing strength & increasing shrinkage cracking. A sample-tray meter measures aggregate moisture in seconds so operators can adjust before the truck loads.

Infrastructure & Civil Projects

Field verification of bridge decks, roadways, tunnel linings & structural slabs before overlays are applied. Premature application traps moisture, accelerating corrosion & surface delamination. Portable & probe-based meters enable testing at the point of work.

Agriculture

Flooring & Coatings Installation

Moisture verification before installing hardwood, vinyl, epoxy, or tile over concrete substrates. Excess slab moisture causes adhesive failure, cupping, warping & mold growth underneath finished floors. Surface & probe meters confirm the slab has reached acceptable moisture levels before installers commit materials & labor.

Restoration & Remediation

Post-flood and post-leak assessment of walls, slabs & building envelopes to determine the extent of water intrusion. Without accurate moisture mapping, remediation crews risk leaving wet zones that lead to mold, structural decay & repeat claims. Internal & surface meters document moisture levels before, during & after drying to verify the job is complete.

Laboratory & R&D

Cure kinetics, mix formulation & material aging studies that require repeatable moisture data across time intervals. Inconsistent moisture measurement introduces variables that mask formulation effects & extend development cycles. Data logging, user calibrations & continuous-read modes support structured protocols.

Specialty & Non-Standard Materials

User-programmable calibrations extend testing beyond factory presets to ceramics, composites & other dense solids. Without custom calibrations, these materials require slow destructive methods. The COUNT mode provides raw values for building calibrations against your reference methods.

Featured Products

Three instrument types cover the full range of concrete and mortar moisture testing — from surface readings on cured structures to sample-based measurement of fresh concrete and aggregate to subsurface probing inside walls and slabs. In-line models are not available in this category.

Kett HI520 02 Instant Portable Concrete and Mortar Tester

The flagship surface-contact moisture meter for cured concrete, mortar, drywall, gypsum board, and other dense materials. Six factory calibrations cover the most common building materials, while eight user-programmable calibrations extend testing to non-standard materials.

Dual-depth measurement compares surface and subsurface moisture to identify gradients in thick slabs. A backlit LCD, automatic temperature compensation, and configurable moisture alarms make this instrument equally effective on job sites and plant floors. Compact enough to operate one-handed at under 400 grams.

Kett HI330 wet concrete and aggregate moisture meter

HI300/HI330 Fresh Concrete & Aggregate Moisture Meters

Purpose-built for batch plants & QC labs testing freshly mixed concrete (HI300) or sand & fine aggregate (HI330). Place a prepared sample into the test cell, set it on the measuring platform & get a moisture reading in under five seconds which is fast enough to adjust water-to-cement ratios before the next truck loads.

Accepts mix data including particle density & absorption for accurate results matched to your materials. Built-in averaging across multiple samples & optional printer output support production-floor documentation. Runs on AC power or 9V batteries.

HI800 Internal Moisture Meter

Measures moisture inside walls and slabs where surface meters cannot reach. Two small brush-tipped probes insert into 6mm drilled holes at a fixed 30mm spacing, reading electrical resistance at depth.

Upper and lower alarm limits flag out-of-spec areas during systematic surveys of large structures. A COUNT mode provides raw resistance values for building custom calibrations against loss-on-drying or other reference methods. Ideal for structural assessment, waterproofing verification, and post-remediation confirmation.
