HM530 Non-Destructive Wood Moisture Meter (Moco II)

Non-Destructive Wood Moisture Meter (Moco II) — No Longer Manufactured

The HM530, also known as the Moco II, measured wood moisture through surface contact using high-frequency capacitance, leaving no pin marks. It has been replaced by the HM540, which carries the same non-destructive method forward with a wider species range and added data logging.

  • Non-marking measurement: read moisture through the surface without driving pins into the wood.
  • Wide range: 2 to 150% moisture content across more than 400 species.
  • Replaced by the HM540: the current model adds 999-point memory, USB logging, and JHWTC certification.

A Non-Destructive Wood Moisture Meter, Now Succeeded by the HM540

The HM530, sold as the Moco II, measured moisture in wood by high-frequency capacitance through two metal sensors, reading inside the wood through surface contact without leaving pin holes. It served sawmills, woodworkers, and inspectors who needed a non-marking reading across a wide moisture range.

What the HM530 Did

  • Non-destructive reading: high-frequency capacitance (20 MHz) measured through surface contact, leaving finished and veneer-grade wood unmarked.
  • Wide moisture range: 2 to 150% moisture content, with accuracy of ±0.5% (±1% above 20%) on standard samples.
  • Broad species coverage: more than 400 species, with adjustable specific gravity (0.10 to 1.25), thickness compensation (10 to 40 mm), and temperature compensation.

The Current Model: HM540

The HM540 carries the HM530’s non-destructive capacitance method forward and adds 999-point internal memory, USB data logging through the optional HDL-02 software, and JHWTC authorization as a moisture meter for conifer timber. For owners of the HM530 and the Moco II, it is the direct current replacement.
